Welcome to Year Two, PLTW Students The course POE or (Principles of Engineering) is the second year course for all PLTW students. This class is taken after their completion of the IED or (Introduction to Engineering Design) course. A broad overview of POE is where the students will learn all about forces and loads, machines and mechanisms, and an introduction into robotics. To get a little more detailed we will learn about all the different areas of Engineering, work on conversions between standard and metric measurements, decimal and fraction, and some binary number systems as well. We will spend time on Stress/Strain forces and calculations where we build bridges and trusses. The Machines and mechanisms section is where we build and test simple machines and mechanisms and determine their Mechanical Advantages. All of this is covered in the first semester of this year long course. Computer programming, robotics, and some of the larger more complex projects are covered in the second semester of this course, please feel free to check out some of the videos on this below. This second year course relies heavily on hands on activities and critical thinking skills. This class will challenge the students to change ideas into actual products, while learning the process along the way.
